It is interesting to note that, what we have today as St.Benedict’s Catholic Parish, Lokogoma, Abuja, began as a Mass Center at the Present Day Settlement of Dogongada, here in Abuja. Its history is traceable to Hassan Aruwa, the then Mai Agwan of Dongongada. He was a Muslim, got converted into Pentecostal Church but did not find satisfaction in his quest or desire to serve and worship the true God. He therefore continued with his earnest desire to find this Living God until he encountered a Catholic Faithful by name, Akuso, who introduced him to the Catholic Church and he found his fulfilment in the Catholic Church. Thus, at the request and efforts of Hassan Aruwa, the First Mass was celebrated in front of the Mango Tree of his house at Dogongada.
However, when the developer of Efab Estate, Chief FabianNwora opened up what we have today as Efab Estate and established this settlement, the Catholic Church which began at Dongongada, also moved into the new Efab Estate, with a handful of Catholics whose membership kept growing gradually. But the young Church however, operated as an Out-Station of St. Anthony’s Catholic Parish, Kabusa, Abuja.
Our Church then attained its amiable and elevated status when it was created as Catholic parish in the Month of January, 2014 by His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan with His Lordship, Bishop AnselemUmoren.
Furthermore, Rev. Fr. Tom Asen was appointed as the First Substantive Parish Priest of the newly created Parish of St. Benedict’s Lokogoma District; presently situated in Efab Estate, of Abuja from 2014 to 2018. Then on 1st of May, 2018 Rev. Fr Tom Asen handed over to Rev. Fr John Sixtus Okonkwo as the new parish Priest with his associates Rev. Fr Geoffrey Kator Charles as the parish Vicar.
